FUB Excellence Initiative

In the latest phase of the German national Excellence Initiative, Freie Universität Berlin has again achieved excellence status. As the joint committee consisting of members of the German Research Foundation, the German Council of Science and Humanities, and ministers of the German federal and state governments announced on Friday in Bonn, the university has had projects approved in all three funding lines. Funds have been committed through 2017 for the university’s future development concept “Veritas – Justitia – Libertas. International Network University” along with three clusters of excellence and seven graduate schools based at Freie Universität Berlin or with participation by Freie Universität. The following excellence clusters were approved for renewed funding: NeuroCure, Topoi, and Unifying Concepts in Catalysis. The following graduate schools were approved for new or renewed funding: Berlin-Brandenburg School for Regenerative Therapies, the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies, the Berlin Mathematical School, the Berlin School of Integrative Oncology (new), the Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School of Literary Studies, the Graduate School of North American Studies, and the Graduate School of East Asian Studies (new).

QS World University Ranking by Subject

According to the prestigious QS World University Rankings by Subject, Freie Universität is the best German university in three subjects and among the world’s 50 best universities in five subjects.


According to the prestigious QS World University Ranking, Freie Universität remains among the world’s top 100 universities. In the latest ranking published, Freie Universität placed 87th worldwide. Among German universities Freie Universität Berlin is in fourth place, following TU Munich and the universities of Heidelberg and LMU Munich!

CHE University Ranking

Freie Universität Berlin performed very well in the most recent university ranking by the Center for Higher Education (CHE). New good results were achieved for the subject of history. In English and American studies, education, German studies, psychology, and Romance languages, Freie Universität’s good performance in the previous evaluation in 2010 was reconfirmed.

DFG Funding Atlas 2012: Freie Universität among Top Three

In the sixth funding ranking of the Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation or DFG), Freie Universität Berlin has expanded its top position among the strongest research higher education institutions in the country.

American Studies at Freie Universität – Excellent

Freie Universität received excellent ratings for the disciplines of English studies and American studies in a research ranking performed by the German Council of Science and Humanities comparing the performance of German universities and independent research institutions. As the German Council of Science and Humanities announced in Cologne, American studies at Freie Universität received the best assessment of “excellent” in three of the four criteria.

Freie Universität Berlin and the Apache Software Foundation (ASF), following an initiative of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, are cooperating in making servers available in the data processing center of the university’s Institute of Computer Science.
